Default Cleaning Cat Urine Odors

Why is cat urine and odors so hard to remove from your carpets? The smell stays around after you have cleaned up the accident. You have tried everything but the small is still around.

A lot of the time the problem is deep down in the backing of your carpet, the urine can reach the underlay and if you have not treated this then the stain will remain. If this is the case then you will have to lift that carpet treat the back of the carpet, cut out the underlay and replace and treat the sub floor.

This can be a very difficult job so you might want to call in a professional carpet cleaner as he will have equipment to first find where the stains are as you might have missed and they are not easy to find when the carpet fiber has dried out. Then he will be able to inject a product into the carpet backing and underlay without taking up the carpet.

But if you think you know where the problem area is and you would like to try and have a go yourself then you will first need to take a trip down the vets as they will have products that the local supermarket don’t stock and will be far more effective.

Choose a cleaning product that has enzymes to neutralize the odor and/or bacteria that essentially eat the elements in the urine that cause the odor. There are chemical-based products that will eliminate the odor. Don’t go for those products that just mask the smell you need to deal with the problem so the problem causing the odors is gone once and for all. Cheap products are normally just perfumes. Avoid cleaners that have ammonia.

Make sure your cleaner is non-toxic to the people and pets in your house, and safe for the fabrics or surfaces you need to use it on. They should be easy to use. Try to choose cleaners that are accompanied by a manufacturer's guarantee. Don’t soak the carpet as you will cause yourself more problems. A carpet dries from the bottom up and if your carpet has jute then this can wick to the top and cause orange, yellow, or brown stain.

The best way to avoid accidents is to prevent them, so make sure that your cat's litter box is clean and that your cat is subjected to only minimal sources of stress.
